Gemstones are minerals that are prized heavily due to their use in beauty, ability to last long and the fact that they are rare to find. The most popular gemstones are diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. There are also non-crystalline materials like pearl, red coal and amber are classified as gemstones. Gemstones are graded on a four-point scale from A (the highest quality) to D (the lowest quality). This article is primarily focused on the amber gemstone which has been in use for centuries and is still prominent.
Amber comes from the Arabic word ‘anbar,’ which means ‘perfume. ‘Amber is a fossilized resin that is used as a gemstone. These fossils are remains of plants and animals that have been preserved in rocks. Being a fossilized resin, amber is a hardened substance that was once part of a plant or animal. Resin, on the other hand, is a sticky sap-like substance that flows from trees when they are injured. When tree resin mixes with dirt and gets trapped in layers of rock, components such as carbon, hydrogen and oxygen accumulate and form amber over millions of years. However, the process of fossilization that leads to the formation of amber can be hastened by artificially heating it, forming “burnt amber. “The most famous amber deposits are found in the Baltic region, particularly in Lithuania and Poland. During the Bronze and Iron ages, amber was very popular in the region.
Amber ranges in color from yellow to brown. However, the most highly prized amber is the deep, golden color. The gem is usually translucent, meaning that light can pass through it, but you cannot see through it. It can also be opaque, so not even light can pass through it. As a result, amber is a beautiful and unique gemstone with many different meanings and associations.
Amber has been used for both beauty and medicinal purposes and is still popular today. It is used to manufacture products such as cosmetics, perfumes and medicines. It is also believed to help relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and boosting the immune system. Besides, amber is said to promote healing wounds and bruises, treat several respiratory conditions such as bronchitis and asthma, protect against negative energy and bring good luck. It is also used to provide important information about the climate and environment of the past. Amber is an excellent addition to any jewelry collection due to its composition and therapeutic benefits. Even in the present times, amber is still being used in these traditional medicinal functions.
The global amber market is categorized according to the type, application form, and region. In the first category, the market is divided into yellow amber, white amber, red amber, and green amber. In the second category, the market is categorized into jewelry, art and collectibles, cosmetics, electrical and electronics, and others. North America is the leader, followed by Asia-pacific, which is expected to witness the highest growth rate during the forecast period due to the growing demand from China and India.
The key stakeholders taking part in the global market are Chiapas Amber, Baltic Amber, Dominican Amber, Burmese Amber, Siberian Amber, and others. These companies are engaged in various strategies, including mergers & acquisitions, expansions, partnerships, as well as launching new products to stay competitive in the market. In conclusion, amber is a beautiful and unique material that has a rich history and origin. It has been used extensively in many parts of the world for centuries, and its popularity is still significant. There is no doubt that amber will still be in use for many years to come.
