If you love ruby and have never heard anything about the gemstone that shares its name, then this is for you. Ruby is a type of corundum made up of aluminum oxide. It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest stones in the world. Pegu Prince Narapati Taungkalahketu first discovered the gemstone in 1848, and he became known after the stone was named after him by British mineralogist John Lonsdale in 1850. It is thought that this ruby is known as Victoria due to its color, referred to as ‘pigeon’s blood red’ or ‘red as war.’

Burmese Ruby
Quality
The best quality Burmese rubies come from the ruby mines of Mogok in Myanmar (Burma). The largest ruby mine is at the Shwe Kyawzaw Ruby Mines by the Mandalay River. The smaller mines consist of smaller concentrations of rubies.

Light vs. dark color
Like most red gemstones, they can be mined from either light or dark-colored stones. Still, it’s always a good idea to buy from a reputable source since Burmese Ruby comes with natural imperfections such as under color and inclusions. Undercoloration is sometimes confused with heat damage. Generally, these are dark inclusions that surround the ruby’s color.

Burmese Rubies Are Hard to Find
Burmese rubies come from extremely deep underground mines, and it can take a long time to reach the surface. As a result, Burmese rubies are generally very hard to find. They can also be found in small quantities, so their price is usually much higher than that of many other ruby stones.

Clarity
One can find the inclusions or imperfections in Burmese rubies in many sizes and positions. They are not always easy to spot; some believe it takes a gemologist’s eye to recognize them. However, they will never negatively impact the stone’s color and are not always visible, so this should not be a considerable concern when making your purchase.

How to Clean
When washing your Burmese ruby, you should use warm water. Do not use any chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, as this can cause damage and possibly change the color of your stone. When storing your Burmese ruby, it is best done on a clean cloth as this will help protect the stone’s surface from things such as finger oils.
