Freshwater pearls are an exclusive type of pearl formed when a layer of calcium carbonate settles on the surface of mussels and is subsequently encrusted with organic material. The organic material forming the pearl begins by secreting a thin layer upon the shell, which is then altered into a gel by marine bacteria. The gel is secreted until it surrounds the object, where it becomes solid and extends outwards to form what appears to be an organic gem. Hyriopsis Cumingi and Hyropsis Schlegeli are two main mussels that produce commercial freshwater pearls.

Freshwater pearls are most commonly found in earrings, handkerchiefs, and necklaces. As a mollusk shell is naturally encrusted with calcium carbonate and organic material, freshwater pearls can come in various sizes. Natural freshwater pearls appear in spherical shapes or are slightly domed after the initial white surface has been transformed into an iridescent pearl.

Freshwater pearls are most popular in China, where they are used as natural and organic gemstones, only rarely showing signs of surface abrasion. As mussels naturally secrete the organic material that forms freshwater pearls, their pearl production is not stimulated by humans. Therefore, freshwater pearl production highly depends on the mussel’s health.

Benefits of Freshwater Pearls
Freshwater pearls are used in various items, including Japanese and Chinese jewelry, necklaces, earrings, brooches, and other pieces. Freshwater pearls are also sold as natural gems used for crafts and personal healing in Thailand.

Also, the pearls enhance the glow in women and men. Freshwater pearls have healing power and are used in necklaces and bracelets, highlighting their glow’s beauty and making the wearer look more beautiful. The pearls symbolize life, love, and purity and have been an essential part of nature.

Wearing freshwater pearls helps with anger management and controlling one’s emotions. The freshwater pearl possesses a calming influence, which can help make the wearer feel more relaxed and happier.

Freshwater pearls are also used to promote mental acuity and help one become more intelligent. Freshwater pearls also have protective qualities, making them beneficial for high-risk occupations such as public safety, law enforcement, military, or security. Furthermore, wearing freshwater pearls is said to minimize stress levels and anxiety and lessen feelings of depression or sadness.

What Makes Fresh Water Pearls Special
Freshwater pearls are sourced from mussels found in clean water. Additionally, freshwater pearls are never chemically treated to create the well-known iridescent colors seen in saltwater pearls.

Genuine freshwater pearl earrings are an excellent alternative to imported pearls as they come from a sustainable source and promote economic growth for businesses based on natural materials within the country of origin. Freshwater pearls are known for their tranquil beauty and serenity. Freshwater pearls come from mussels that inhabit clean waters, which means the pearls themselves are free from pollutants and other impurities.

Freshwater pearls have an elegant and captivating natural glow from within the shell of the mussel, unlike other cultivated pearls doused in chemicals for artificial colors.

Cultured freshwater pearls are the most common type on the market, which means they are readily available at relatively affordable prices. Freshwater pearls have a higher luster than saltwater pearls but have looser nacre and often appear as bumps or dents on the surface of a pearl.

Color and Pricing
Freshwater pearls come in a rainbow of colored nacre. There are black, grey, white, and pink freshwater pearls. Pearl colors range from subtle shades of white to rich, vibrant colors. Freshwater pearls are priced in four categories: Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, and Grade 4.
