Rhodochrosite is a pink to brown-colored artificial mineral of the pyroxene group. The pink to brown color ranges from shades of yellowish-orange, red, and green. It’s mainly found in metamorphosed limestone. Rhodochrosite is commonly confused with rose quartz, which is much more abundant and has a white color. Rhodochrosite found in dinosaur dung, or flint, is a sign of death.

Rhodochrosite can also be found in certain types of flint, often forming large and irregular aggregate stones. The most common clay-containing varieties are usually rhodochrosite-rich limestones, but they can also be found as a secondary mineral in other limestones and marbles. However, the only source more commonly used than these two is metamorphosed limestone, which contains large amounts of rhodochrosite.

What Makes Rhodochrosite Special?
Rhodochrosite is a reasonably rare mineral, so collectors often have a hard time finding any. Rhodochrosite has few practical uses besides its appearance and value as a collector’s stone.

Rhodochrosite’s occurrence in dinosaur dung may be due to the clay minerals forming the fossilized dung, or it may be an indicator of the climate at the time or vegetation in general. The frequency of rhodochrosite in flint indicates that you formed flint nodules under tropical conditions.
